Time to get tougher

NOTE that they are NOT synonyms http://m-w.com/dictionary/republic 1 a (1) : a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is usually a president (2) : a political unit (as a nation) having such a form of government b (1) : a government in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to law (2) : a political unit (as a nation) having such a form of government c : a usually specified republican government of a political unit the French Fourth Republic Read (2)b(1) and (2) Now compare to the next definition. http://m-w.com/dictionary/democracy 1 a : government by the people; especially : rule of the majority b : a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections 2 : a political unit that has a democratic government Look at 1b and 2. Compare to the above definitions. Not a lot of difference. We are a representative democracy or republic. They are virtually the same. "Majority rule" or democracy is impossible with the Constitution and Bill of Rights. That the Constitution is ignored and laws are broken does not alter the fact that the united states is a *constitutional republic*. Each state is even guaranteed a republican form of government by the Constitution. It's just too bad they don't leave them alone after that to run the state without federal interference. Steve |
