Default R.V. Jones on scientific intelligence and on the building of scientific instruments

R.V. Jones wrote two books after he retired, summarizing his two careers
in scientific intelligence and as a university professor. I recently
read both books.

1. Jones, R. V., 1988, "Instruments and Experiences", London: John
Wiley and Sons.

This book is a summary of all the major instruments he has designed and
experiments he has performed. Each chapter is a slightly edited reprint
of a major article, plus some of the background.

Jones was a physicist, and a master of optical and mechanical systems.
When electronics technology arrived, he collaborated with another
professor, J.C.S. Richards, to design and build the electronics part of
the instruments.

Many of these articles are not easy to get, and so this book is the one
best source. I very much like how Jones designed his instruments, and
learned many things from him.

2. Jones, R. V., 1989, "Reflections on Intelligence", London: Heinemann.

This is in effect a continuation of Most Secret War (which I also read,
some years ago), again expanding and finishing the various stories.
Also, Jones directly comments on the correctness of the various books
covering the same WW2 issues, many of which I have also read over the
years since the Official Secrets Act restrictions on WW2 data expired.
He also endorses a number of books as being correct histories. Jones
was in a position to know, so his opinion carries some weight.

Jones, R. V., 1978, Most Secret War: British Scientific Intelligence
1939-1945, London: Hamish Hamilton. ISBN 0 241 89746 7 (Published in the
USA as "The Wizard War" with the same subtitle.)
