Default bar puller design

I'm building a custom bar puller. This $550 puller won't fit.

I'm using the same concept and would like to copy the fingers. The unit
works by adjusting the distance between the fingers for the size stock you
have. Then the puller is pushed on the stock. Spring tension holds the bar
tight so you can pull the bar back after releasing the collet.

My number one question is what material to use for the fingers. Would stock
from a truck leaf spring be good? Is this stuff a stone bitch to machine?
