Where's the metal content? Is there anyway we can feed the spam to the
bit bucket?

The spam in this group is comparable to most other newsgroups. What
is different is the amount of OT non-spam posts. I left the group for
a year or so when the OT posts outnumbered the topic posts- this was
before the big spam barrage. With the combination of the OT (mostly
political) posts AND the spam, this group has the lowest signal/noise
of any group I frequent. I sure wish the folks that use this group to
spout off all their political diatribes would find an appropriate
political-subject group to do so in.

Well, the fake watch and India porn guys usually post in groupings, so it
isn't too hard to recognize and yank them out by the bunch. Islam guy posts
a couple of times a week, but it's usually easy to spot.

Other than that, putting a few dozen of the political bickerers in the
bit-bucket helps a bunch (you'll lose about 20% of their metal content, but
IMHO it's a worthwhile tradeoff).

It isn't what it was a year or so ago, but it's still a good group, with a
lot of good experience to learn from.

Gunner's OT posts can sometimes be a minor nuisance, but they pale in
comparison when all the dickheads line up to cut him down...

Use your filters, or just ignore the OT & etc. I don't find it all
that hard to pick out the useful stuff...

And, for what it's worth, Gunner posts a ****-pile of good info, too.

Just my $.02 worth,

Al

Sure, until they wake up and eat your computer's mouse. ;-)

Killfiles. Use them. Love them. If your newsreader doesn't support
them, get a better one. For starters, kill crossposts to 2 or more
newsgroups.

Unfortunately, my ISP, like many these days, does not support Usenet,
and I must use the Google interface, not a newsreader (no, I will not
pay extra to use a third party news service). So I can't filter very
well.

news.individual.net is about 20 bucks a year. If annoyance avoidance
isn't worth that to you, well, good luck.

This group actually has a lot of useful content, as others have said
you need to apply killfiles. Here's an example of the sort of thing
that you can do.

filter using "Path:" header to remove googlegroups and webtv

filter using "Newsgroups:" header to remove crossposts (kill if
there's a comma indicating more than one newsgroup)

fiter using "From:" header to remove individuals who you don't want to
hear fom for whatever reason (political, offtopic, huge sigs,
unpleasantness, etc).

For me, killing crossposts and googlegroups made an enormous difference to
the quality of many newsgroups. It's unfortunate that I'll miss some
genuine contributions but I couldn't stand many groups without that
filtering.
