Default OT - Anyone using Thunderbird with XP?

I've been trying to establish filters for the newsgroups but I can't
seem to get them working at all. I have been trying to filter out all
that porn crap (for starters) by looking for certain words in the
subject and deleting the messages. Ain't happnin. I have enabled the
filter log several times but it keeps disabling itself too. The option
to run filters now is greyed out and of course doesn't work.

I am using the latest Thunderbird having just upgraded to 2.0.0.9. The
filters didn't work with 2.0.0.6 either. The Mozilla help and forums
haven't been much help either. Several things regarding mail, but
nothing for News.

Thanks,

Wayne

Wayne, I use it for email, but not for newsgroups, but I will try it
tomorrow to see if I can set up a filter by subject.

I'm not seeing 'em. Might be my newsfeed (news.individual.net, 15 bucks
a year or something), they have very good spam filtering. Might be my
ruleset that takes out any crossposts to more than two groups. If your
newsreader supports regular expression killfile rules (regexp), try:
Newsgroups: *,*,*

That'll match any post sent to more than two groups, and you won't see
it. Most spammers and trolls are lazy and/or want to spew as widely as
possible, so this gets a lot of 'em.

I have enabled the
filter log several times but it keeps disabling itself too. The option

Trying to match all the words will drive you nuts - try a cleaner feed
and the crosspost thing and if there's much or anything left, I'd be
surprised.

I should have mentioned that my news feed comes from my ISP which is Pac
Bell. Er. . .Wait, it's SBC now. No . . . no. . . that became AT&T.
But don't they use Yahoo??? Lets see . . .the setup for Thunnerbird
shows news.sf.sbcglobal.net. They are not very good but they come with
the DSL service. They have a short retention period and whenever
someone includes more than 3 photos at a time (such as
alt.binaries.pictures.woodworking) , I can only see three.

I only use Thunderbird for news. I use Outlook (the real one) for mail,
but only because I have been ever since Microsoft came out with it years
ago. It was required at work, so I brought it home and just too lazy
and too accustomed to it to change.

One other thing. I just configured Outlook Express for the same news
groups and the filters work there. I may just have to start using OE.

Filters work fine with Thunderbird and newsgroup feeds on XP. I read
this NG with a couple of the regulars filtered out. Filter structure is
not quite a sophisticated as I'd really like but catches most of the junk.

I'd reload, retry. Pretty staight forward. .

OK, I think I got the filters working. I had to remove the news
account, re-add it, re-configure the filters, and then re-download
everything. Nice not to have all that crap showing up now. Thanks for
the help.

Try using news.aioe.org for an account. Free and reasonably fast.
