Even in iron heads, it's always been my practice to thread the plug in at
least a couple turns with only finger pressure, before a wrench ever touches
it. If you've crossthreaded one, you find out pretty quickly that way.

This is also a good argument for using antisieze, esp. if the
heads are aluminum. Just a dab on the threads is all you need.
As there is considerable metal content [lead/copper/nickle
depending on the brand/type] if you get any on the nose you will
short out the spark.
