When the returned carton was eventually opened up, there were cinder blocks inside. The perps were long gone by then. The swine buys something he wants, and thus gets a receipt. He takes the item home. The next day he returns to the store, takes an identical item off the shelf and slithers into the "return line" without being noticed. You can figure out the remainder.
