Default Good quality small air compressor?

Does such a thing exist? I want a decent compressor but don't have space
for a big one but all the small ones are lubed for their too short life.
Do you guys know if there is somewhere I could order a decent oil type
compressor then attach to my own small tank?

This leads me to wonder why the small rotary compressors are not more
popular. Anyone have experince with them?

Thanks

Princess Auto (and likely Northern ) carry compressor heads of all
types and sises. Or get one from a truck wrecker(air brakes). These
are QUALITY units about the right sise - use a 30 lb propane tank for
the air tank. I have a 60 lb tank, upright, on mine. I welded the
mount for the compressor and motor to the "crash cage" ring, and put
the air manifold into the tank where the propane valve used to be.

On the bottom I brazed on a fitting in the middle of the "bell" end
and drilled it for the drain. The tank is tack-welded into one of
those mini spare tires which acts as a base and vibration damper.

Try looking in a big-rig junkyard: lots of Class-8 trucks use them for their
brakes.

Is size your only concern or would you be talking about capacity when you
say "small"?

Porter-Cable makes one [model - C3551] that is rather small in size but has
the following description/specs:

Job BossT 4.5 Gallon 150 PSI Portable Air Compressor
Model C3551

FEATURES
.. 1.3 HP (running) 4.5 gallon, mobile, contractor-style, single tank air
compressor.
.. Patented oil lubrication system allows pump to be operated on an uneven
surface and assures long life.
.. 12 Amp current required - Low 12 Amp motor draw prevents accidental
tripping of circuit breaker.
.. 120 Volts/60 Hertz/1 Phase.
.. 2-port removable console to allow remote air regulation and higher
pressure closer to the job site.
.. Full roll cage frame for pump and motor protection.
.. 4.5 gallon storage capacity air tank supports heavy use of brad nailers,
staplers, and finish nailers; moderate use of roofing and framing nailers.
.. Mobility kit for increased portability on the job site.
.. Two year limited warranty.
.. CUL listed with ASME safety valve to meet all codes.
.. Oil-lube air compressor for maximum durability.
.. 150 PSI tank pressure for longer tool run time.
.. Air delivery 5.4 SCFM @ 40 PSI, 4.4 SCFM @ 90 PSI.
.. 83 dBA - quiet operation
.. Higher 120 PSI cut-in pressure provides 30 PSI of bonus air before a 90
PSI rated air tool becomes inoperable.
.. Two-pole, 3450 RPM capacitor start induction motor for maximum air
delivery.
.. High-flo air regulator and push-to-connect couplers.
.. Heavy duty, cast iron cylinder construction and large 8 oz. oil capacity
to assure long life.
.. Standard Equipment: 4.5 gallon 150 PSI portable air compressor, mobility
kit, ASME safety valve and operator manual.

SPECIFICATIONS
Lubrication: Oil-Lube
Tank Size Gal.: 4.5
HP (Run): 1.3
Amps @115 Volts: N/A
Max. PSI: 150
Air Delivery @ 40 PSI: 5.4
SCFM @ 90 PSI: 4.4
Mobility Kit: Yes
Regulator: Yes, High-flo
Gauges: 2
Quick-Connect Couplers: 2
Weight (lbs.): 86
Shipping Weight (lbs.): 95

The "removable console" is very handy: by connecting a
quick-disconnect-equipped air hose between the tank and the "console", the
controls and twin quick-connects can be moved closer to the work while the
compressor stays near the power source.

[I have their C3151 "Oil Free" version and use it often.]

Pretty much what I did except my 30 pound tank is inverted and mounted
by a frame bolted to the protective ring. The compressor/motor is on a
wood base sitting on an angle iron frame bolted to the "base" ring of
the tank. This frame also serves to carry the control board. Air is
fed from the compressor to the tank through high pressure flex line.
By mounting the tank this way, I can use the single opening for inlet,
outlet, and drain.

Depends on what you consider rotary. Lots of small vane compressors
are used for volume, not pressure, like old-timey computer tape drives.
If you mean like screw compressors, I've never seen one.that wasn't on
a trailer or didn't have its own reinforced concrete pad. They
probably don't scale down too well. I've not seen any small scroll air
compressors, just ones used for building A/C. Probably too costly for
shop use.

Take a look at the Speedaire line at Grainger.com. Belt driven, oil
lubed pumps. I have a similar one with a 14 gallon horizontal tank, and
it works for me.
good luck,

Eugene:
What type of usage? There is BIG difference in air demand between
running a nail gun and a high speed die grinder. Not knowing the
demands or usages of your particular tool leaves you open to wasting
time and money on a piece of equipment that may not have the capacity
you need. What are you going to use it for?

W. W. Grainger has a wide selection of both complete compressor units
and components including pumps.

Sometimes it doesn't pay to build something custom when you can buy
one pre-assembled for less than the cost of all the pieces.

Hitachi, Porter-Cable and DeWalt (that I'm sure of) all have "small"
oil-lubricated packaged portable compressors in the 1.5 to 3 HP range,
2 to 4 gallon tanks, 120V motor with a pressure switch and most all
with a built-in regulator and some form of protective cage around the
breakable parts.

And thanks to the wonders of mass production, they are reasonably
priced and look like they'll last several years in medium duty uses
like construction and field mechanic.

A direct drive 1800 RPM compressor head isn't going to last as long
as a belt drive running at 500 - 800 RPM at the compressor crankshaft
(though the oil bath helps), but having the pulley reduction system of
a conventional compressor takes up a lot of room.
