Will the smaller grease guns that take the small tubes work for one of
these? I assume they are almost the same internally with smaller parts.

I have used chain saw bar grease guns with success.
I put oil in the chamber and inserted the cup back in the end. The cup
seems to prevent any big leaks and nothing came out of my unit as long as I
stored it vertical. It pumped the oil just fine.

Yup, I made one, and it worked fine. They are a bit messy, and tend
to always be coated with a film of oil, but they sure work. I pull
out the plunger and spring, and braze a disc over the hole in the
cartridge holder/handle.
