Default Welding rod question

I understand that L H7018 means low hydrogen 70000 lbs per square inch. What
does the 18 mean? Thanks for your answer.

The flux, which affects how you weld with it (the welding position, AC
vs. DC, spatter, slag texture, etc.).

Wrong! That is rod meant to be welded using only your LEFT HAND!!!

The "1" designates an all position rod, as opposed to a "2" for flat
position only .

The 8 designates the flux type.
In this case, a Low Hydrogen flux.

Ernie: Doesn't it mean flux containing iron powder? Is a 7028 a low
hydrogen rod? Or is that a 4 ending that means heavy iron powder, like a
7024?

What does the 18 mean?

***********
I was taught the '1' means 'any position' welding. Flat, vertical, overhead.
If I remember correctly, I believe the '8' means DC only, reverse
polarity.... but I don't remember that well anymore.

Thannks for the replys. It wasn't real important, but satisfied my

From Lincoln's web site:

http://www.lincolnelectric.com

One of their pdf files, you'll have to find it yourself. I
renamed it and don't feel like searching for it right now

They do have a lot of good info on electrodes if you care to
find it.

Use a fixed font so this lines up correctly.
