Sculpture makes stop in Newburgh

Newburgh - As a lifelong Newburgher and now the mayor of this wildly
diverse city, Nick Valentine has played host to a spectrum of visitors.
Yesterday, Valentine added a new one to the list.
Down on the city's waterfront, Valentine considered the best possible way
to greet a 21-foot long cast-bronze sculpture of a three-horned dinosaur.
"This just goes to show, we are the city of diversity," said Valentine,
patting the monster's hoof. "We can make room for anybody."
The sculpture was brought to Newburgh from the Foundry at Rock Tavern in
New Windsor. The foundry and Newburgh's Yellow Bird Gallery are both owned
by Dick Polich.
Polich cast the sculpture of the dinosaur - it looks like a triceratops,
horns, bone-plate collar and all. It is, in fact, a Cretaceous-era
Torosaurus, bound for Yale University's Peabody Museum of Natural History.
He arranged to have the sculpture displayed at his gallery for four
days - through Monday - on its way to New Haven, Conn. It will be among the
attractions at the city's 17th annual Riverfront Festival this Labor Day
weekend.
It arrived with the fanfare of a pontiff.
Flanked by police cruisers with flashing lights, the dinosaur crept down
Newburgh's Broadway on the back of a slow-moving flat-bed truck.
Children ran from side streets to catch a glimpse, and business owners
snapped photos.
Outside the Karpeles Manuscript Library, 5-year-old Tae-Kwon McDermott
gave the statue a wave.
Nothing.
"Hey," huffed Tae-Kwon. "Why didn't they get a T-Rex?"
