I am planning on building an aluminum gantry crane of a capacity of
1/2 ton.

Has anyone done this before who would like to comment as to what they
did right and what they would do different over?

The uprights will be 4" aluminum pipe and the aluminum I composite
beam (3" x 8") will be two I beams stacked with each being 3" wide and
4" high with a total length of approximately 7' long. The feet will
consist of aluminum channel (yet to be obtained) with 6" casters.

Just remember that welding aluminum will mess up its heat treatment, T6
becomes T0 at the weld.
