If you're relying on the walls to hold the ceiling up, you better learn
how to fasten sheetrock.

As it is common practice to hang the ceiling first, it is a common fact
that the wallboard helps shoulder the ceiling board at the perimeters.
However this does not eliminate the need for fasteners at that point.

I find it a lot easier to hang the ceiling first then butt sides up to it.
If you do the sides first then you're going to have to cut the ceiling to
fit... which is a pain.

And right there is the only reason for doing the ceiling first. It is a
very good reason at that.

If the walls are needed to hold it, or even 'help' hold it, the
mechanic doing the hanging needs to find another business.

It just so happens that the sides do help hold it, but as you said they
shouldn't be "needed" to help hold it.
