Hi All,

I watch my mileage. I have been running pure gasoline now
for a bunch on months.

My mileage jump up from 23.5 on 15% alcohol to 25.5 miles
per gallon on pure gasoline

That's great , but what you really need to calculate is the miles per
DOLLAR . If there is like here , that pure gas is higher priced than the
gasohol .

It is 40 cents more per gallon. I have an equation for
miles per dollar, but the gas prices keep jumping
all around, so it is pretty hard to make a good
comparison.

Also it is pretty hard to calculate the cost of the
reduced wear and tear on my engine.

Price/Gal Price/Mile
$2.68 $0.1181
$2.42 $0.1027

$2.56 $0.1015 Pure
$2.64 $0.1055 Pure

It hasn't been news for two decades that alcohol fuel mixes reduce mileage simply
due to less energy content in the fuel.

Where have you been?

I can live with the hit using E-10 but when we tried a tank of E-85 in
North Dakota I said never again. I had a rental with the instant MPG
display on the dash and it was dramatic when that E-85 worked it's way
through the fuel system an hit the injectors. It wasn't much cheaper
either, I might have been about the same. A little ethanol increases
oxygenation and octane (Eliminating lead and MTBE) but when you get
much over 10%, you are really taking a hit.
E-0 (REC90) is a whole other thing. They need a more expensive blend
of petroleum to get there.

I think E85 requires a special engine to handle it and T said it was 15%
that he used.

I understand that you cannot pipeline gas with ethanol as the ethanol
making the mix more polar tends to clean the pipes and gum up the gas.
I recall when they switched to the blend in nearby PA they had to dig up
the tanks at gas stations to put new ones in. I understand they tank
the ethanol to the refineries to mix there and truck out.

All these different blends and regional specification just raise the
price of gas.

I use a custom blend of gasses. Start with 78% nitrogen but then I add

rep walked over and told me their experience was that
mileage always increased a bit (liar). I told him
about my spreadsheet and how it had decreased by 2.5
miles per gallon. He was dumb founded. What was he

Where is the calc that matters, with the .40 cent price difference?
Quick math in my head, the E85 gas is less expensive,
you get about ten percent less mileage, but the cost per gallon is
about 15 percent to 20 percent less.

I use E-10 for everything and I don't have any trouble but my boat
keeps the gas moving. I just don't put gas powered tools away without
running them dry so they always get fresh gas. I usually mix it on the
spot. A pint of gas gets 10ccs of oil for 50:1. You can usually talk
your pharmacy out of a 10cc syringe for free. It would be less than a
buck if they made you pay.
My weed eater uses 32:1 but the tank is less than a pint so I give it
10ccs of oil. I suppose I could measure how much it really is and do
the math to meter the exact right amount but this is not that
critical.

OK so they must be doing something right. ($47 today, +17.5% in a

It hasn't been news for two decades that alcohol fuel mixes reduce mileage simply
due to less energy content in the fuel.

Where have you been?

Very true and they are screwing him by charging more for pure gasoline
as it is cheaper to make.

You have cites for that? That it actually costs the refiner more for
alcohol than to refine crude? Also factor in the retailer needs a
separate tank and pump that's low volume to support it.

Educate yourself by looking at it into the whole process.

I take that to mean that like usual, you have no cites. Thanks for playing.
Are you going to Tulsa?

I could easily find cites and I know you do not like to think for
yourself. But, you called me into question and it is up to you to prove
me wrong.

That's not how it works. You made a claim and were asked to support it. Now
the best you can do is walk away and say 'prove me wrong'? I think you
proved yourself wrong.

It works for me.

The price of both alcohol and crude vary widely but I assume both go
into the price along with more than a little wiggle room to flatten
the curve. I know the $40 XOM I bought during the panicdemic is doing
OK so they must be doing something right. ($47 today, +17.5% in a

consequence. I understand maybe a 50 cent a gallon tariff was put on
ethanol from Brazil where it is cheaper.

I worked for a biochemistry company in Boston where the founder was a
PhD level chemist. He did love the helium trick at company get

were strange. One of the best chemists was welded to his WalkMan (this

Pink Floyd.

Most environmentalists have given up on Ethanol as being their dream
fuel. The ecological costs are too high and Brazil is the poster child
for this. We see a microcosm of this here is South Florida where we
are blaming sugar for all of our water ills. Granted most US ethanol
comes from corn instead of the sugar they use in Brazil but our corn
crop is far from benign too. The latest boogie man is Glyphosate but
there are also concerns about the GMO frankencorn Monsanto has a
strangle hold on.

That reminds me of some TV show where they were talking about
"environmental" groups that were really just political and knew nothing
about the environment. A lot of people would sign a petition to ban
dihydrogen monoxide. Anyone asking what that is were told something like
"It's a chemical used in industrial processes, which gets into lakes and
rivers. People who have contact with it get cancer.".

Of course, ethanol blends started during the Nixon adminstration,
production subsidies started during the Reagan administraion and
democrats were fully aware of the impacts related to diversion of

You must be living in a a hole somewhere if the impacts of ethanol

IIRC, this is related to the long-standing tariffs on Brazilian sugar
which have been in place to protect uneconomic sugar production in the
southeastern United States.
