I just installed a new dry condenser/compressor 3.5 ton unit. It uses R-22
Freon. I silver soldered the tubes in and charged the system and it works
good, but was thinking with a dry unit (not pre-charged like the last one I
bought 10 years ago) do I need to add oil or is it already in the compressor?
I need to know so I don't burn it up.

Is it a two-stroke piston or a four-stroke scroll compressor?

Not sure what the rules are today, but not too long ago you could still buy R22 components, but not packaged, whole systems. Which would explain why it's dry. Why you'd want to just replace the condenser is another story.

The last R-22 uncharged condensing unit I bought was from Johnstone Supply at least 8 years ago. I just checked, they're still selling them. I suppose you could smuggle some R-22 in from Mexico? ヽ(ヅ)ノ

The compressor should have plenty of oil in it but if you had a burnout, you need to blow out the line set and evaporator tubing with nitrogen if you have it. There are charts that show how much oil to add to the system for the line set and evaporator. I'm sure you realize that you must pull a deep vacuum on the system before adding Freon. There is more and more detailed information on easy to find websites for the entire procedure along with videos that can explain the entire process better than I can here. ヽ(ヅ)ノ
