Default getting rid of refig and air cond?

What is the usual procedure in the USA now for getting rid of an old refrig
and a window air cond that don't cool anymore?

In many communities like ours there are special trash pickup days set aside for
large appliances. A loader puts the junk intoa truck and it is hopefully
disposed of in a environmentally proper fashion. HTH

The local landfill should have a place to retire them. Tom

Around here, we just put it out on the curb and within an hour someone will
come by with a pickup truck or trailer and haul it off. (South Alabama).

There is no usual procedure in the USA. It varies by localities and
ranges from very strict with a large charge for removal, including
collecting the coolant, to just take it to the dump and they smash it
into the ground with the other stuff. Or at the very bottom end, they
just dump in in a hole and eventually cover it up.

Most people just leave it on the curb and someone in a rusty old truck will
pick it up at night for scrap or you can have the coolant sucked out and a
bright orange sticker slapped on it.
