refrigerator water dispenser has plastic taste
We bought this Kenmore refrigerator 2 years ago. It has automatic ice
maker and a filtered water dispenser. For the past 2 years we took care of replacing the filter on time and never had problems with the water taste or anything. However, about 2 months ago the refrigerator stopped cooling and we called a technician who fixed it by replacing a fan. Since then, the water coming through the dispenser tastes like... PLASTIC. At first I thought perhaps the time has come to replace the filter (it was about time anyway). So I replaced the filter with a brand new one (that I bought about 8 months ago). But the water still tastes like plastic. :-( Now... I can relate this sudden water taste change to either the technician work (how could it be? Isn't the water system sealed?) or the filter age? The filter was kept brand new in its box since I bought 8 months ago, but I have no idea whether those filters have expiration date or something like this. Any idea what could be the problem and how to fix this? BTW, the tap water at home, filtered in a Brita pitcher, tastes perfectly normal. So I tend to rule out a problem in the home's water supply. Thanks in advance! |

Thanks in advance! when you replace a filter you have to run about two gallons of water out through it to clear out the filter and the water should be fine then??? if not then call up the tech. service people about the refrigerator and they should be able to tell you what to do about it.... |

Jim, thanks for your reply. I (of course) followed the instructions (as always) and ran at least two gallons of water out through before attempting to use the water. I guess I will have to call the tech. service people, but I doubt they would find the source of the problem. They are great at repairing something that BROKE, but unfortunately they are not that great at TROUBLESHOOTING or trying to find the SOURCE of the problem. Thanks! Daniel |

I was wondering if you ever found a resolution to this problem - the plastic taste. I purchased a Kenmore refrigerator 1 year ago. Both the water and ice have a plastic taste. I have replaced the filter (running at least 2-3 gallons out of the dispenser after changing it) at least 3 times. It seems to taste fine for a few hours after changing the filter, then the plastic taste is back. My faucet water does not have this taste, so I know it has something to do with the refrigerator. I called Sears and they sent a technician who replaced 4 parts and said if that didn't fix the problem, there really was nothing else he could replace that could be causing the problem. After he replaced the parts and we again ran a couple gallons of water, it tasted fine. By the next morning the plastic taste was back - both ice and water. I have called Sears again and they are sending the same technician back. Now it's up to him to see if he can taste the plastic taste in the water. If he can't, they're telling me I'm pretty much out of luck. If he can, he can call his manager and the manager has the authority to do something about the situation - even if that involves replacing the refrigerator. I brought some of the water to work and had 6 people taste it. 4 out of the 6 noticed a definite bad after taste, though they didn't really pinpoint it to plastic. I guess if the service tech can't taste it I will have purchased a refrigerator with water and ice dispenser that I can't use. I can't stand the taste of the water and the ice ruins the taste of anything I put it in. Any suggestions as to what else may be causing this? It uses a PUR filter. |
