The PURPOSE of alt.home.repair

It seems that alt.home.repair has become a newsgroup to discuss
everything EXCEPT home repair topics.

Alt.home.repair *IS NOT* the place to post politics, gun control,
current events in the news, sexual preference issues, religion,
terrorism, personal attacks on others, and so on.....

There are newsgroups specific to these topics. for example, try
alt.politics.xxxxx alt.religion.xxxxx and so on.
A good catchall group for all of these topics is:
alt.current-events.usa

Alt.home.repair *IS* a place to discuss all repairs and construction of

machines, tools, plumbing and electrical, and some automotive repair
issues.

Yeah, wander in here and talk to people that have been around here
literally for years how they should change their ways to suit you.
THAT's not gonna happen. Especially to the pussy that won't sign his or

This clown nym-shifted twice in as many days. It is Home Guy, and
other names. Paintedcow was one recent example.

I've been "around here literally for years", actually "literally for decades".

I think you'd agree that the percentage of on-topic vs. off-topic threads
has seen a major reversal, especially most recently. I actually remember
a time when the off-topic stuff was few and far between the home repair
posts and not vice-versa like it is now.

I was extremely liberal in counting off-topic discussions in a.h.r, even
allowing automotive repair, cell phone backup programs, etc. to be considered
*on*-topic since they at least have something to do with "repair" - if you
really stretch the definition. A full 50% of the most recent 60 threads are
100% non-repair related.

You people who have been "around here literally for years": Think back, is
that what a.h.r looked like back in 80's and 90's? Not to my recollection.

That is correct, but we shared our knowledge freely. Now posters need a
porthole to go through. They want information handed on a silver platter to
them without doing any kind of basic research; which is MUCH easier today.
We had to crawl through and around the web to find answers which were
usually hosted at educational institutions at blazing speeds. If one needed
drivers, instructions you had to find a site that would host them. Present
posters don't even bother to look at the item packaging for the site. How
many times has "How do I mount an electrical outlet; ground up or down?" "I
only have two wires how do I get a ground?" on and on... I could do without
the politics and other distractions. Sometimes it's the only thread worth
following. I only come here when able usually not every day. I will then try
to read the original post and then the voluminous off-topic replies. If I do
reply then I am criticized for not keeping up. Users used to be lucky if the
hosts allowed six simultaneous connections. Busy signals and failed
connections were common.

I agree there is more drift and OT, but that is because of

there is whoreshub and the fact that USENET is dying. I
remember the days when it was very very active, most if not
all binary groups are trashed and the rest are slowly being
destroyed by the likes of burky and all other nymshifting
losers. This and rec woodworking are the exception to the
other ngroups that I use to read. YMMV

Thank you for your efforts, but as you can see from
the responses, there's little civility or even common
sense to be found. And it's getting worse. Old men,
acting like children who need a diaper. But there's no
one in charge and they seem to have not been raised
with the basic ideas of courtesy and consideration for
others. So it's a case of pearls before swine.

I regularly consider just dropping this group altogether.
As it is I'm blocking a number of regular posters. (Not
even "trolls". Regulars!) Yet I still see more nonsense than
discussion. I stick around only because I might be able
to offer useful help to the occasional person who happens
by with a real question.

construction of homes, garages, sheds, yard care, lawn
mowers and
other small engine machines, tools, plumbing and
electrical, and
some automotive repair issues.

*** LETS STAY ON TOPIC ***

Yeah, wander in here and talk to people that have been
around here
literally for years how they should change their ways to
suit you.
THAT's not gonna happen. Especially to the pussy that
won't sign his
or her own name.

I've been "around here literally for years", actually
"literally for
decades".

I think you'd agree that the percentage of on-topic vs.
off-topic
threads
has seen a major reversal, especially most recently. I
actually
remember
a time when the off-topic stuff was few and far between
the home
repair
posts and not vice-versa like it is now.

I was extremely liberal in counting off-topic discussions
in a.h.r,
even allowing automotive repair, cell phone backup
programs, etc. to
be considered *on*-topic since they at least have
something to do
with "repair" - if you really stretch the definition. A
full 50% of
the most recent 60 threads are 100% non-repair related.

You people who have been "around here literally for
years": Think
back, is that what a.h.r looked like back in 80's and
90's? Not to my
recollection.

I agree there is more drift and OT, but that is because of
the likes of burky and btj and their ilk that have drifted
here. As far as the OT from regulars, I'd say its about the
same. Very few if any questions don't get answered. Then
there is whoreshub and the fact that USENET is dying. I
remember the days when it was very very active, most if not
all binary groups are trashed and the rest are slowly being
destroyed by the likes of burky and all other nymshifting
losers. This and rec woodworking are the exception to the
other ngroups that I use to read. YMMV

+1

One could argue that if all the OT stuff was gone, the whole
newsgroup might go the way of all those other newsgroups.
And like you say, the recent acceleration in OT mostly political posts,
is from a few posters, who have only more recently shown up.
They post multiple political OT posts every day.

I gave up.
Have you found a good alternative?

Alt.home.repair *IS NOT* the place to post politics, gun control,
current events in the news, sexual preference issues, religion,
terrorism, personal attacks on others, and so on.....

There are newsgroups specific to these topics. for example, try
alt.politics.xxxxx alt.religion.xxxxx and so on.
A good catchall group for all of these topics is:

Instead of whining, is it too difficult for you to ignore the posts you don't like?

Three Old Men

Three old men are talking about their aches, pains and bodily
functions.

The 70 year old man says, "I have this problem. I wake up every
morning at seven and it takes me twenty minutes to pee."

The 80 year old man says, "My case is worse. I get up at eight and I
sit there and grunt and groan for half an hour before I finally have a
bowel movement."

The 90 year old man says, "At seven I pee like a horse, and at eight I
crap like a cow."

So what's your problem?" ask the others.

"I don't wake up until nine!"

Alternative home repair group? No. Unfortunately,
few people seem to know, these days, that this
resource is even here. I have come across contractor
chat when doing searches, but those are somewhat
specialized and require becoming a "member".

{smile} I like hardware stores, too! Or, I should probably say I had to
learn to like them because the men in my family spent a lot of time
there, me being with them when they wanted to stop there meant I spent a
lot of time there, too.

I guess it helped because now all my projects I do are because of
everything I learned while tagging along.

In case you have not noticed, all those groups are dead.

I don't know about that. I googled "alt.politics" and got a few links to
groups that sure seem to have some activity. Quality activity? I don't know
(or care) but they don't seem "dead".

alt.politics
alt.politics.usa.republican
alt.politics.nationalism

I could go on.

I have used doityourself.com/forum in the past with decent results.
Gardenweb has come up in searches I have done in the past with some good
information. For plumbing you can't beat terrylove.com, and for tile
work I recommend johnbridge.com.

At times, I have searched & found some useful forums that are not
usenet - so they require an email address to sign up.
auto eg : Kia ; Ford Taurus.
Also - I have a few Yahoo Groups that have been useful
- very specific topics -
eg : Elna sewing machines ; Necchi sewing machines ;
WheelHorse garden tractors.
Appliance repair is another topic I have searched & used.

I have been online for 20 years and alt.home.repair is the best home repair forum I have found bar none. No commercials. Real people with good advice and who actually know what they are talking about. Block the spammers and goofys. MUCH help here from people who have done things, rather than those who guess at something. There are good online forums, too, but this is where I always start. Very happy to stay here myself.
