Sam's Club sent out a flyer for a service to clean and restore
headlights that are dull, and faded.

I could have done this myself, using several techniques posted in
videos and ideas posted on the Internet.

Anyway, today my wife took the 1998 vehicle (desert car) to Sam's Club
and used the service. Took about an hour. Price was $29.95 verses
cost of products and time for me to do it.

I was shocked at the quality and results. The headlights look just
like they are new - seriously.

For the price, they warranty a 5 year warranty guarantee and will do
them over if they fade or dull in that time. Just keep the documents.

She'll be taking her 2007 SUV in later. As I say, I'm impressed and
that takes a lot

....

The switchover to plastic lenses was a bane; wasn't an issue with glass.
All for a few ounces weight savings...

I polished up the ones on the old pick'em up also a '98 by coincidence
some before heading out on the road a couple weeks ago just in case did
get caught after dark...not a professional job but only spent a few
minutes with some 400 and then 800 wet/dry paper and then some polishing
compound. I'd wager even Sam's wouldn't ever get these approaching
anywhere near "new-looking" though...from the appearance the crazing
appears to go fully thru the thickness of the lens altho it does reduce
in intensity/coverage as one removes material.

But, while I wasn't on the road after dark on the trip, did take it to
town one night just for the hey of it to see and it is remarkable
improvement, at least for a while. Have to see how long they remain.

Took a look...one of those cleaning kits is $20

I think I'd just do it myself.

Sorry, no I don't. For the price and 5 year warranty, no labor on my
part was a good idea for $29.95. The desert sun is terrible on plastic
headlight lenses.

I can even see all the light bulbs now

Sun is hard on plastics but more so is grit which scratches the surface.
You probably have more of it in your climate than those of us elsewhere.
I don't know what they do but could just polish the surface
imperfections out. Also do not know what OEM lens producers do but I
would add a scratch resistant coating that is often used on acrylics.
Maybe they do when restoring.

Dust storms are hard on the plastic lenses, like a sand blaster. Dirt
and dust even falls in rain, sometimes. Last week if rained at my
house for just a few minutes with high winds and the car looked like a
mud storm had hit

Having done it myself with the kit, $10 more is well worth the cost for
them to do it. I just looked at a $20 kit on Amazon. "Less than 30 minutes"

Yeah, maybe less than 30 minutes of actual work, but add in the the set up,
the masking, the clean up, etc. and you are well beyond 30 minutes.

Plus no warranty. $10 and they do the labor, clean up and warranty the work?
That's defined as your basic no brainer.

Funny thing about the video at Amazon. The guy mentions that you'll need to
have "some clean water available, either a bucket, a spray bottle, or a hose
will work fine. Oh, you'll probably want to have a pair of scissors and some
paper towels or a clean cloth handy too".

He *immediately* follows that up with "The kit has everything you'll need."

Wait...what? The kit has water, scissors and paper towels included? No, it
doesn't? Why did you just say it has everything I'll need? Make up your mind!

Kind of a mute point for me as

1) I have never had a headlight sustain any type of damage or fogging

2) My car has the lights behind a protective glass

That said, when I was stationed out in the desert, sand damage was
common and a windshield could be useless after six months.

I'll bet if you look carefully you'll find that "glass" is plastic.
I've not seen a real glass cover in ages--which raises the question of
what's the make/model of the vehicle in question?

What? I didn't hear your mute point?

But, that's OK. You didn't hear my mute
point, either.

Probably is plastic...car is a 2004 Vibe (Toyota)

Damn nice car...picked it up used about five years ago when I knew I'd
be retiring within the next few years. The back seats fold down and the
front passenger seat folds forward and the little car can hold a lot.

No problem getting 8 ft boards loaded inside without even having to hang
them out the back.

I used this on two of my cars. Took about 15 minutes to do 4
headlights. $6.47

I'm assuming Sam's Club also put a UV sealer on afterwards. Perhaps
that is why they give the 5 year warranty. Can't touch or wash the
plastic lenses for 24 hours.

$29.95 was a good price to me. Aside the bride had it done and was
what she wanted.

Around here at most shops it's advertised for $70 w/ one year warranty. I
suspect it's an inspection spiff. The lenses yellow from the UV rays. I
suspect the grit you stated is not helpful... I had it done for $40 but my
lenses were the color of ****. They quoted an hour but I called after 2 and
they weren't quite done yet. The car is no longer on the road, don't ask.
