I have 2 W10 installations. One is an update from W8.1, and shows as
activated. The other is a clean installation that shows as not
activated. Both have been there since summer. There seems to be NO
difference in the updates available and installed on them.

Don't you need to activate in a certain number of days?

I didn't. I ran W10 for several weeks without activating.

I fixed a laptop for my bride's friend. It had a corrupted
certificate -- new clean install Win7 SP1 and updates, finally did
confirm activation. Used the (case) label product key and NOT the OEM
product key. Bang! Good as new.

I tried that with this Inspiron 660. I input the # from the MS tag on
the case, [which was originally W8] and no joy. I tried NOT inputting
the activation # and still no joy.
Why can't MS just do like they did with W95, W98, WME?

These installations were made at the time time this summer. I left one
non-activated to see what would happen. The only difference I see so far
is desktop message (and the one in "about").

BTW, I don't use (or even have) a Microsoft account.
