The built-in-1930 luxury building I lived in in the 1970's had lath and
plaster between rooms, but concrete between my apartment and adjacent
one. Never heard a peep out of them, either.

Why in NJ? The main problem there (and in most of the state) is that
fire codes don't require fire stops in common attics. Starts in the
building, gets to the attic and then goes from one end to the other
unimpeded.
