I have a shower stall with an American Standard single handle faucet and shower head. About 6 years old and for several years ever 6 - 12 hours the shower head just leaks a bunch of water (a couple ounces) for no reason. I assume if the faucet was closing all the way I would be getting a more constant repeatable drip.

Is there a way I could better diagnose the problem?

Clearly there are only 2 possibilities, the shower head is somehow filling with water or the faucet has a tiny leak.

Thoughts?

Why it only comes out every 6 to 12 hours, I don't know. Air

Because there is a flat section of the pipe after the valve. The water gradually
fills it up until there is enough water to start a drop down into the head.
Surface tension then causes the rest of the water in the flat section to follow
that first drop, until water would have to rise from the pipe to follow, at
which time the drip stops. Each time, the flat stretch of pipe is empty, then
refills from the faucet leak very slowly until it happens again.
