Default Rrecall on dehumidifiers

.... causing fires.

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China's Gree Electric Appliances Inc is
recalling about 2.2 million dehumidifiers after the devices caused
dozens of fires and $2 million in damage, the U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission said on Thursday.

The recall affects about 80 dehumidifiers with brand names Danby,
De'Longhi, Fedders, Fellini, Frigidaire, Gree, Kenmore, Norpole,
Premiere, Seabreeze, SoleusAir and SuperClima, the commission said in

Thanks for posting, it's possible that I might have two of them - will
have to check models and production date. Here's the info from CPSC

Default Rrecall on dehumidifiers

The Graduate "One Word: Plastics"
MJC America, which owns the Soleus Air brand, recently filed suit in
federal court in California asserting that the dehumidifiers were
defectively designed and encased in a non-fire-retardant plastic by its
Chinese manufacturing partner, Gree Electric Appliances.

Well, when the typical failure mode involves an exothermic chemical
reaction, any failure is bad.

I'm merely the messenger. You decide.

See the link from Nate about the recall and fires.

I notice that the sample picture on the CPSC site shows an improper
installation - right next to an unlimited source of moisture i.e. sump
pump so the poor dehumidifier would never shut off.

Not necessarily. I have my dehumidifier right next to my sump pump. The
sump is dry. It is there in case the cellar floods.
