Default Steel punching, a process of metal forming

Punching is a metal forming process in which a hole is created in a work piece by using punch press to force a tool called punch through the metal piece. The process of punching usually involves a die into which the steel scrap slug is deposited. At times the slug may be recycled and reused. This process is often considered to be cheapest method of creating holes in steel sheets when it is medium to high volumes of production. If the punch used in the process is specially shaped and creates multiple usable parts then it would be considered as Blanking. Hot punching is the process observed in forging applications where the metal piece is punched while it is hot. Hardened steel or tungsten carbide is used for making the punching tools. The amount of force needed for making the hole often depends on the thickness of the material. A die placed on the opposite side of the metal piece ensure, that the shearing forces are localized providing a cleaner edge and also adequately supports the metal sheet around the perimeter of the hole. It is usually preferred to provide certain clearance between punch and the die to avoid the punch sticking in the die. Steel being a ductile material sometimes might stretch to some extent during punching and might cause the punch to stick in the work piece. This process of physically pulling back the punch out of the hole w
