It was only Cat 1, but it was 1000 miles wide and moved slowly so it pushed a lot of water into bays, inlets and beaches. It also hit during full moon and high tide. It also had the lowest barometer readings ever recorded. Most hurricanes hit a narrow path and fizzle within a few miles of hitting land. |

It's amazing that the satellite is able to pick up the state borders, even at night. Greg |

That is what confuses people. It was only Cat 1, but it was 1000 miles wide and moved slowly so it pushed a lot of water into bays, inlets and beaches. It also hit during full moon and high tide. It also had the lowest barometer readings ever recorded. DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said the storm was roughly the size of Europe. That is huge... There were two high tides (spring tides) that made it all worse. Folks would serve themselves well by knowing about the barometric pressure of a pending storm. When the pressure drops drastically, head for Dodge City. Most hurricanes hit a narrow path and fizzle within a few miles of hitting land. Yes. A hurricane can pause and weaken over land, like Cuba, Haiti or the Dominican Republic.. Once crossed they can strengthen again in warm shallow waters, like the Florida Straits or the Gulf of Mexico. |
