That is what confuses people. It was only Cat 1, but it was 1000
miles wide and moved slowly so it pushed a lot of water into bays,
inlets and beaches. It also hit during full moon and high tide. It
also had the lowest barometer readings ever recorded.

Most hurricanes hit a narrow path and fizzle within a few miles of
hitting land.

Thanks. It's amazing that the satellite is able to pick up the state
borders, even at night.

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said the storm was roughly the size of
Europe. That is huge...

There were two high tides (spring tides) that made it all worse. Folks
would serve themselves well by knowing about the barometric pressure
of a pending storm. When the pressure drops drastically, head for
Dodge City.

Yes. A hurricane can pause and weaken over land, like Cuba, Haiti or
the Dominican Republic.. Once crossed they can strengthen again in
warm shallow waters, like the Florida Straits or the Gulf of Mexico.
