OT? My WOP Cousins Are Out Of Their Freaking Minds
Seven Italians convicted of manslaughter for not sounding alarm about
deadly 2009 earthquake. This has got to be the goofiest criminal prosecution I've read about in a long time. O_o http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/49507760 TDD |

O_o http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/49507760 TDD It was on the box over here too. Really weird that one. I mean no-one can predict earthquakes anyway so predicting the strength must be impossible. But then..... Italy. The land of bunga bunga parties. |

Apparently you didn't read the article or even realize that the system of 12 jurors isn't used in much of the world. They were convicted by a JUDGE. Probably wouldn't have happened if they used a jury. It will be interesting to see what they get as a result. I predict either there will be a very generic message about earthquake probabilities in the future that essentially says nothing, and/or most geologists will find jobs that don't require them to make any public predictions at all. |

My maternal ancestors are from Naples and my late mother was one of the wackiest women I've ever known, so I guess it fits. ^_^ TDD |

I expect this is a case where the judge knows that the sentance will be overturned on appeal, but he's taking the position that it's better to warn people about the possibility of an imminant earthquake than to not say anything at all. This case wouldn't have gone to court if there wasn't any seismic information to suggest that an earthquake could be imminent. It's just that the geologists wanted to be more sure before crying wolf. And that's in fact the crux of the matter; earthquakes are hard to predict. The judge knows full well that if they had warned of an impending earthquake, they'd be criticized if one didn't happen.
I think everyone knows that earthquakes cannot be accurately predicted, but I think it's far more likely that everyone involved here is intelligent and competent and did what they believed was best. It's just that the newspapers recognize that to explain the reasoning of the geologists would require that they teach the public all about earthquake geology, and they simply don't want to devote the space in their newspapers to do that. So, we get headlines that basically say: "Geologists jailed for not predicting the unpredictable." Everyone involved here is of good intelligence and is doing what they think is best for the right reasons. The only time you see or hear of people being totally incompetant is when you watch TV. In fact, if you want TV, it's easy to come to the conclusion that most of the human race is totally incompetant. Last edited by nestork : October 23rd 12 at 06:52 PM |
