wrote: Hello, The neighbor up the hill decided to plant some bamboo to cover the steep hill behind his house. It has quickly come down the hill over the years and it dangerously close to my yard. What can I do to stop this junk? I don't think much of anything, is there? Do local governments sometimes ban this junk? I want to burn the crap but I know it won't do anything to stop it. Where can I find some Agent Orange? Thanks! ray Not to sound racist but talk to some Indonesians, Filipinos, Chinese, etc... as they have this stuff grow naturally in their countries so I figure they must know how to deal with it as well. I've heard that bamboo is hardy so I understand your concern. Other ideas is to talk to a local nursury or google it (assuming you haven't done this already). Maybe some vegetation killer might work tho it might creep over the property line or try a root blocker??? Outa curiousity can you post back what you learn or how you will deal with it? |

Your local govt may have an option for you. Just like a neighbor/
property owner can't divert runoff water/drainage onto your property, infringing on your property or its normal use, some invasive non- native plant species, that a neighbor has purposefully planted, have to be controled by that neighbor from invading your property. You will need to consult with the local govt and applicable ordinances and with the neighbor. An applicable ordinance may not specify a particular specie or scenario, but is applicable enough to cover an unforseen circumstance as with this bamboo. The neighbor, not you, may be required to install some sort of petition at the fence line or control the spread from on his side of the fence, but if you are able to work with the neighbor, the overall outcome (including civil peace with your neighbor) may be better resolved for both of you. If an ordinance is found to be applicable, the neighbor may be required to perform any removal from your property, if the bamboo does eventually invade your property. It would be good for you to somehow demonstrate what damage can be expected and/or what hardship the invasion would present to you and your property, also, in your effort to site the ordinance and have it enforced on your behalf. If there is some sort of damage and/or hardship being demonstrated on his own property, for he, himself, this can be further evidence for your concern about it invading your property, i.e., example: is the bamboo growing toward his house/other structure/etc., also, such that he is having to take measures to control that direction of his own invasion scenario? Now is the time to best address the issue, as you seem to be doing, not after the bamboo has established itself on your property. Sonny |

Well, the building inspector was as useless as tits on a bull, like usual. He has been here forever and I have only talked to him a few times. But all of those times he either had no answer or the answer would cost be big bucks. This time, it was no answer...sort of. He said there is no ordinance in our community for any type of plant, including bamboo. He suggested I talk to the neighbor, which I will do no matter what. The neighbor doesn't have to cut anything down but he did give me a little nugget to go with. He said if it starts to invade my property, I can go after him for trespassing. I don't want to go there for all of the obvious reasons. And the fact of the matter is that this guy did not plant the bamboo, it was the total idiot who was there before him. This knucklehead chopped down a beautiful Crimson maple tree that was full grown and perfectly shaded his deck. His wife "couldn't see," so the dummy listened to her, chopped the tree down, and planted the bamboo. All this woman wanted to do was spy on the neighborhood and call the borough whenever she saw anybody doing anything. The house is sitting at the top of a hill and she could see literally for several miles in all directions. Of course, he liked spying on people, too (we in Pittsburgh call it "being nebby"). Sorry. I will stop ranting. Now that the weather is nicer, I will take a walk and talk to the guy who lives there now. This could prove to be futile as I looked at it closer yesterday after I mowed the lawn and the bamboo is EXTREMELY healthy and vibrant. Why the hell can't my tomatoes grow that that crap? (Sorry. I posted this on Google whenever I was at work today. I don't see it out here, so I figured I would post again.) |
