That said, I dated an orthopedic surgeon a few years ago and she was
telling me about the screws used to screw two piece of broken bone
together. Putting a clearance hole in one bone piece allows that
piece
to move around too much. So, pilot holes are used in both pieces,
but
the screw has two different diameters and thread pitches. The end
near
the head has finer thread. So, the screw grabs well in both pieces,
but every turn of the screwdriver sucks the bones together tighter.

(I know how screws are manufactured, and someone is laughing all the
way to the proverbial bank, because these things sell for $1800
each.)

Must have been really specialscrews. My leg broke - both tibia and
fibula, about 2" above the ankle. It happened while on vacation in
Holland. About 4 hours after it broke, I was back from the OR and
resting in my hospital room. 12 screws in the 2 plates to get both
bones to heal. The Xrays aren't clear enough to see the threads on
the
screws. I got billed ~?7,100 together for both ambulance (?685) and
all
the surgeon's and hospital costs (3 nights - ?6,450). Exchange rate
was
~US$1.30/? at the time, so US$9,230. There was an additional $150
for
medications to get me home. So, if you need to break a leg, go to
Harderwijk, Holland to the St.Jansdal Hospital grin.

Friends of ours family was vacationing in Germany. 16 yo son had
emergency appendectomy. Out of pocket expense to family was just over
$50.

Steve

They are just trying to advance tourism. :-)
But, seriously, how much did they charge their insurance company?

How the heck would I know?

Steve

Well, you knew the out of pocket costs.
My Out of pocket costs for operations in the US is less than $100.
That includes two hernia operations, a parathyroid operation, and an
angiogram..
I understand you had bypass surgery. I'm glad it worked out OK for you.
That's a lot more expensive operation than what I have had, and a lot
less than a appendectomy.

Sorry, the last clause should read 'and a lot more than an appendectomy'.

FYI, my out of pocket expenses on approximately $150,000 was $2800.

Steve
