I am installing a small piece of chair railing and don't have a brad gun.

Can I glue the railing, made out of MDF, to the wall, and if so, what
type of glue should I use?

Yes, it probably would hold, but for about $2.00 you could get a tube
of construction adhesive which would be much better. Use masking tape
to hold the moulding overnight, and don't use so much that it oozes
out, have paint thinner available to clean up any that oozes out.

Do you have a hammer? (It's an old-fashioned tool consisting of a short
handle and a mass of steel. It is used to drive bits of steel resembling
large pins that, in turn, hold two pieces of wood together.)

I would not glue it because you would have to tear up the drywall in
order to remove it. If you nail rail with finish nails at an angle into
the studs, they will hold nicely. Most walls aren't entirely flat, so
where there are gaps a little dab of paintable caulk will fill the gaps.

If it were me, I'd find the studs in the wall, drill holes in the MDF,then
fasten the MDF through the wall to the studs with drywall screws. This way
the rail may easily be removed in the future with little damage to the
drywall, but the railing would still be secure enough to take some abuse
from chairs. The holes in the MDF may be covered with plugs available from
Home Depot and Lowe's.

Failing that, there's construction adhesive, such as "Liquid Nails". It's
like caulking but specifically intended for structural uses. Works great,
but it's pretty much permanent; it will tear the face off the drywall if
you try and remove it. If you can't find it, ask one of the floor staff in
the caulking department of your favorite hardware store.

It's just that I'm hurt that duct tape was never suggested. I have a
