Default Toilet Seat Hinge Screws

The OD of the plastic toilet seat hinge screws for my seat is 3/8". The
hole in the porcelain is larger than 1/2". The screws do not have a
shoulder washer to cause them to center in the hole. Why aren't the
holes closer to the right size?

Because they work just fine as is. I've never had a problem. Making ceramic
fixtures is not the same as machining metal and they allow a large tolerance
for many possible variations of attachments. If you have a problem, insert
a plastic sleeve or slip plastic tubing over the bolt.

Default Toilet Seat Hinge Screws

My mom had bought removable toilet seats from Sears in the 1970s.
Other than cracking leg/bumpers they are still in great shape.
You can remove the entire seat and wash it once a month.

But I wonder why can't I just buy a set of hinges to make ANY seat
detachable? I have a hard enough time finding the same seats.
