Default Satellite receiver cycles on and off

For a couple of days now, my DishNetwork satellite receiver (model
VIP-622-DVR) has been cycling on and off every few minutes. (Nothing
is displayed on the TV screen).

Why?

Haven't a clue, but the folks over at alt.dtv.echostar will probably
know. That is where I ask my Dish questions, and they usually are quite
helpful.

OOps, make that alt.dbs. echostar. (my newsreader insists on
abbreviating group names on the pick list.)

Wind. It has been windy on earth and the satellite get our of line since it
is stationary and the earth gets blown around a few feet. Take a look and
you can see the moon jiggle sometimes.

best ask at satelliteguys.com

its all about satellite tv.

first unplug receiver for at least a hour, make certain its in free
air, not covered by a towell, or inside a enterainment center.

now try powering it on again............

Rueful chuckle. I had to set mine on wood rails in the equipment stack
to get more air space under it, even though it was on the top of the
stack, and the thing underneath is seldom switched on. Had two of them
self-destruct the hard drive due to overheating, and only got a second
'self install' mailed replacement by upgrading and restarting the 2 year
service obligation. They wanted me to pay local dealer for a site visit-
I called local dealer and they said they don't do that for receivers
obtained directly from Dish. Always call before about 4 in the
afternoon, to get an english-speaking CONUS-based CSR. All in all,
Dish's customer support business model sucks.

I think their receivers either need a real fan, like an actual computer,
or big external heat sinks mechanically tied to the hard drive mount.
Like maybe make the lid or base out of a thick U-shaped hunk of metal,
and use the big heat sinks like a 1960s stereo amp.
