I am so sick of my aged white vinyl tile in bathroom!
It's not worn or cracked; just crummy-looking with
some staining where an idiot dropped nailpolish
and didn't tell me right away!

Paint store said can't paint on top; vinyl "too soft".

Professional help is not an option at pre$ent.

If I can locate fake bamboo tile, can I install it
on top of the vinyl?

There are vinyl paints or coatings around; for example, there are some
for refinishing tired vinyl car seats. If a different color of that
sort would be OK for you until your budget can handle a pro
installation of nice bamboo tile, then check with an auto body supply
store which is likely to have something in stock. Painting over is
quick and easy and cheap. Tiling over isn't much fun and the results
may be iffy.
Try a different paint store, there could be other options. Good luck.

Would not probaly tile over it without removing it , so the new floor
is good and solid when you are done , agree do not paint it as it
will not hold up.

Jim - I' wouldn't be painting for the ages, so long is "will not hold
up"?
A year? Two years? Or less.
Would appreciate a guesstimate if you care to make one.

Joe - The paint store I mentioned is a well-
established local business, so I guess I took what they
said for gospel, but a second opinion couldn't hurt,
so I will inquire at an auto body supply store & post what
they say.

Bamboo TILE or bamboo LAMINATE?

If laminate, sure. It floats over the floor anyway, so you need not remove
the existing tile.

Look in the local ad paper for a guy that does vinyl floors on the side,
after supper on the way home from his day job. Then look in the remnant
rack at local flooring place till you find a scrap that is big enough in
a pattern you can stand. That is what I did for my 3/4 bath, to cover a
crappy floor. Came to about $150 altogether, looks fine. Painting the
old stuff, or putting self-stick tiles over it, will look like crap. If
that is too spendy for your current budget, check the remnant racks or
garage sales for a hunk of indoor-outdoor carpet with the non-skid back,
make a paper pattern (do a Google search to find out how), and make a
drop-in wall-to-wall carpet. If it gets too funky, you can always take
it to the carwash to power-wash it.

Or just live with what you have until you can save up for a real floor.
I can guarantee it looks worse to you than it does to anyone else
walking in there. Others don't even notice it. Paint it, and that is the
first thing they will notice.
