I need to replace the a/c (actually, a heat pump) for the house. Which manufacturers make which brands? Are all the brands available in the US made in the US?
Thanks, Jean |

Why not ask vendors or suppliers where you live? What is normal in Florida may be different in Oregon. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Thanks, Jean You didn't mention what area you live in. You could check the yellow pages for your area and see what the most prevalent brands are where you live. I there are a lot of dealers for a particular brand, you could get a good deal and be assured that there are plenty of folks around who could service your unit. I've sold inexpensive systems and I've sold expensive top of the line with all the bells and whistles gear. It all boils down to whether it's installed correctly and properly maintained. Even an inexpensive system will outlast the expensive stuff if it's properly cleaned and maintained when the high dollar system is not taken care of. You should clean a heat pump twice a year. TDD |

I know what brands are available, what I was trying to find out is which brands are made by the same manufacturer ...like, I think I read once that Trane & GE are made by the same manufacturer. The reason I wanted to know the relationships between brands is that if a specific brand gets a lot of bad reviews, I could assume that its "sister brands" are also less than desireable.
As far as choosing a new a/c, most folks say that one should go with the best installer in town. Unfortunately, the local installers all have bad reps as far as quality goes. So the choice may boil down to which brand of a/c is better. Jean "The Daring Dufas" wrote in message ... Jean wrote: I need to replace the a/c (actually, a heat pump) for the house. Thanks, Jean I would suggest first finding a local installer first. They will have local knowledge of what brands and models perform will in your area. Since they are likely to be the ones to service it as well, they will likely have parts available, which may not be the case of you have chosen a unit not commonly used in your area. If you don't trust them to help you pick out the brand and specific unit, then they should not be installing it. A good tech will take a look at what you have and consider making changes to improve the system. |

There is no GE anymore. It is now Trane. American Standard is also the same as it is the Parent company. If all your local installers have bad raps then you need to look elsewhere. In that case, try this: Call up a local wholesaler warehouse. In other words, call the place where the installing companies go to pick up their equipment. When you call, ask for a counter person. Ask them if they were going to install a new unit in their home, which dealer would they use. Keep in mind that you would need to find one that is in your area. Call several different wholesalers and different counter guys. Bubba A lot of the city sales guys know who the crooks are and may have no problem warning you. Me and a friend of mine were discussing how we couldn't bring ourselves to rip people off, especially older folks who tend to trust anybody and are easily bamboozled. We just lost a little old lady who we always took good care of. She was the mother of a late friend of ours who passed a few years ago and we were very protective of her. I'm always astounded at the outfits who make it a habit of gouging the elderly. I can't do it to them. TDD |
