Default Ice maker stopped

GE refrig with ice maker turned on by putting lever down
Put it down and it made ice for a few hours then just stopped.
Regrig has not been moved or touched in any way. Icemaker just appears
to have died. Any experience with this kind of thing.
Box is 5- 10 years old. Came with house that I bought last year.

TIA

OK, but how long have you been using the ice maker? And how long has
it been stopped?

IME sometimes the cycle timing varies and I wonder if mine is broke
(or breaking).

I generally run it about every two weeks since I only use a few ice
cubes a day. Been using it since I got the house about 16 months ago.
flipped the lever down yesterday (Wednesday) morning. It made about 10
ice cubes and then got quiet. I have flipped lever up and down a couple
of times. If it does not come back to life and the repair is not both
easy and cheap I can just go back to ice cube trays.

Depends on what you mean by "cheap". It's an easy replacement, with a
new unit costing no more than $120.00. I got one for $80.00. Look
online for your model, then tell the local appliance parts outlet how
much you'd pay through "ecommerce", and they'll usually match that
price. Tom

Did you hit the switch in the ice box and turn it off? Did you bend the
'ice bucket full' arm/switch? Where is the water line taped off? Under
the sink or in the basement?

What switch?? I will look for a switch (where?)

One more possibility: Maybe it is frozen. If you can shut down the
frig for a few hours with the door open and then turn it back on, ...?
BTW that might be a good time to clean the coils and under the frig.
:-)

Interesting idea. May not be so easy to do, but will look into it.

The switch is that which gets activated when the metal lever gets moved.
Its possible that the switch was broken inside and moving the lever is now
just a dummy move. There should be no additional switches to activate the
icemaker. I find that simple disassembly and reassembly often fixes
electromechanical problems even if you don't find the cause. 50/50 at least
its worth a look in most cases.

Check to see if the ice tray is full, if not the valve isn't even opening.
Give it a day more. you might have just activated it during the defrost
part of the cycle and it needs more time. If additional symptoms occur like
frosting, continuous running or freezup of the fridge compartment then you
may have a deeper problem with the defrost timer or the defrost heating
coil.

In older (not electronic controls) models, the ice maker and defrost timer
were integrated and power to it is supplied through the drfrost heater coil.
If the coil goes open, everything stops working except the cold.

On, under, around the ice maker. There is also a plug behind or under it
to remove it. Check that.

Thanks

That's a rhetorical question, of course. Again, I'm sorry. The OP can
contact me with any questions regarding the installation, as the email

I happen to be a good mechanic, but why bother when a couple of ice cube
trays will make ice with no other work on my part.

Look
online for your model, then tell the local appliance parts outlet how
much you'd pay through "ecommerce", and they'll usually match that
price. Tom
"Easy" is relative, based on experience and ability.
Thank You.
Lou
You're welcome. Yep, I realize that just turning a screw can be
overwhelming. Losers. Tom

Sorry. Tom

Please forgive my response to your reply (Uh, all three of 'em). I get
flippant. Just remember to shut off the water before you remove the
old icemaker, eh? Tom

Yup and no offense taken.

Default Ice maker stopped

I bet that there is a water filter in the line to the ice maker and that it
is clogged.

I too bet the fill tube is frozen

Ah, but why did it freeze up? It has worked fine for 16 months.

Normally what happens is the refrig was unplugged for some reason or the
water was shut off at some point. Causing the line to freeze. Try taking
everything out of the freezer part and shutting down, open door and let
thaw out. I have seen this happen many times and this is usually what
causes ice makers and water dispensers to stop working.

Thanks, but it was not unplugged nor was the water shut off.

It did make ice one time again. Then it got tired again.
