I am looking for a headboard-attached swivel arm for a laptop, so I
can use the laptop while in bed, and then be able to quickly and
conveniently "push it away" when I'm done.

None of the swivel arms that I've seen online so far seem good enough.
They don't seem to be long enough. Also, The kind I need would
probably have to have at least 3 joints for proper positioning/
adjustment.

Call your dentist and find out where he/she gets the swivel arms which hold
the trays full of evil tools they stick in your mouth. Something like that
would be mechanically ideal, although the feng shui might be a bit off for
most bedrooms.

Dental equipment is seriously overpriced (my dentist tells
me) and so is medical equipment generally. What you
want is a "bed table,"
(1) a standard item of luxury bedroom furniture approx. 1900
(2) standard today in hospitals for bed patients.

My concern would be that the weight of the laptop along with user's
typing hands would cause a lot of bounce if the laptop was mounted at
the end of long, hinged bar, unless that bar was pretty solid and each
joint very tight. Other's have suggested dental trays, which would
indeed have the characteristics required for solid support at the end
of an extended, jointed arm.

I'm guessing that you're looking for some type of industrial quality
laptop holder, not something available through normal consumer
channels. Of course, then we're looking at industrial quality costs
also. Try contacting some laboratory or industrial equipment supply
houses and see if they have any ideas.

A longer arm puts a lot more stress on everything. Having something
that will handle your $1000 laptop and jostling safely might require
either more money, more effort (opening walls to install blocking) or
compromising on arm length.

An alternative would be to have the laptop holder fold up into the
headboard or above your head, but that would be more obtrusive. The
hospital roll away bed tray is probably the easiest, safest way to
hold your laptop. Modify the tray to suit your needs.
