Default The tile screed, how is this tool used?

Is it used like my bubble levels except without the bubble?

It is used to work the thickset mortar on the walls and floor
for laying tiles the old fashioned way.

For each wall or area to be tiled, lath is installed on the
wall after building paper. A couple of screed boards are
attached to the wall or floor. These are installed perfectly
plumb and in plane with each other. The mortar is applied to
the wall and then the tile screeds are used to screed the
mortar to a perfectly flat surface. When the mortar sets, the
screed boards are removed and the grooves filled in with more
mortar. Tile is then installed onto the mortar bed.
