I have a home alarm system that appears to be hard wired into my house.
For the last day one of the alarms (in the ceiling of the upstairs
hallway) has been chirping every minute or so. I can't figure out how
to remove it from the ceiling and can't figure out how to make it stop
chirping. I have never used the system and don't have the code. The
manual that came with it says it is a Z700 Security Control (at least,
that's the manual for the keypad). There is a transformer plugged into
a socket in my hall closet that is labelled "Alarm System," but when I
unplugged it nothing happened to the chirping.

How do I turn off the chirping??

And if I want to use this system, do you have any suggestions as to how
to activate and use it (and how to get a password)?

Hi,
Most likely back up rechargeabe battery inside the control box(in your
closet) is dead. Replace it and let it charge(4-5 hours) it'll be quiet.
If you want to mute the chirp only, it's in the manual how to do it.
Without master password, it's impossible to do somethings on the
programming side. Who was the original installer?

Hi,
If you unplug the x-former, it'll be quiet. Really I think battery
inside the control box is shot. (common sealed lead rechargeable
battery). Costs about 10.00. Replace it and let it charge and things
will be back to normal.

As Emily Litilla used to say, never mind about the beeping. I
discovered it was really my radon detector (which is plugged in just
under the alarm) and had a low battery. If only everything else was so
easy!

I am still interested in thoughts on how to use it, tho.

it's not hte alarm its the battery in your smoke detector

A local dealer for the brand you have will have the access codes to reset
the system and provide you with new passwords.

It is just a matter of having the necessary codes to punch into the keypad.
The things are like a computer running in pre-dos mode.

With a brand name you might find the reset info and a manual online.

iT'S still not that simple. I'm sure it's not a radon detector.
They don't put them on the second floor, and I don't think any exist
that monitor continuously. They make radon tests that go in the
basement, and have to be sent in somewhere to be measured. I did it
20 years ago, and, since it was much less than the dangerous amount,
iiuc that's probably enough.

It must be a smoke detector.

I'm guessing that it is chirping to let you know that your battery is weak.
Check the back up battery.
As for getting a code, I would call a company that deals with the type
of system you have & have them come oput & reset your passcode. (they should
know the mastercode)

The odds are the battery needs to be replaced. My system does this when the battery needs to be replaced. The system also beeps when the main power goes off,, or the connection to the system is terminated,

Thanks for the thoughts. It was a CO2 detector, not a radon detector
-- my bad -- that was doing the chirping, due to a low battery.

Just to make my life a bit more miserable, I unplugged the alarm system
transformer when I was trying to diagnose the problem; of course, that
did nothing to affect the chirping but did make my alarm system keypad
go into overdrive. The next night at 2 it started beeping
intermittantly, just enough to drive me crazy. I eventually went down
and reinstalled the transformer; that solved that problem.
