Whole House Air Cleaner
Hi;
I need to replace my Air Conditioner system and furnace. I have seen some Whole House Electronic Air Cleaners on ebay. Are these worth the expense to have them installed? Do you have to replace filters and how much are they? My 12 year old daughter has some allergies, so I may buy one but I dont want one if it is a gimmick. Thanks for any advice. Pat |

Whole House Air Cleaner
Electronic need to be cleaned often or they loose effectivness fast,
the rating is for a clean unit. See what your installer offers as he will warranty it, wide media like Air Bear work well, April Air media leak at the case. Media filter better with age. There are new expensive multi electronic- media out, Running an electric can depending on model for me add 10$ a month to Kwh usage. I think my electric bill is to high so I look for ways to keep costs down firstly, media do not compromise if the correct unit is used. |

Pat While I can understand the interest in doing anything possible for your daughter, I have allergies, you may want to do some more research. Do you know what your daughter is allergic to? If so is it likely that an air cleaner would help? For example an whole house air cleaner is not going to do much for dust mites. Other things it may help. They did nothing to help me. There are whole house units attached to your central heating system and there are stand alone systems that can really only do one room. Then there are the Sharper Image units that are almost totally worthless, but get a lot of misleading advertising. Often a good media filter will work better than an electronic filter. There are tradeoffs with both kinds. You may want to consult a local HVAC professional to help you decide what might be best for your home and needs. Your daughter's allergist may also offer some good advice. -- Joseph Meehan Dia duit |

Pat I am not sold on the concept of just cleaning the air when the a/c is on. If the a/c is not matched to the cleaner then there are more problems, static air pressure. What is your daughter allergic to? Will the cleaner remove this? I use Merv rated paper filters and change them every month. Check out WW Grainger and paper filters and or do a search for MERV filter ratings. |

They seem to break down a lot, from what I hear. A former owner of my house was a hvac guy, and there was a stack of dead electronic air cleaners next to the furnace. The one that is still installed in the furnace is also dead. Pat |

How do you know they are dead. Maybe they were working units he saved for parts for the installed one. Power supplies can be easily swapped. Bob |

Whole House Air Cleaner
Call your local WW Grainger branch as they have discontinued a
boatload of air filters and are almost giving them away. I just bought a case of filters that was normally priced at about $5 per filter for about $1.27 each in the case. They are air handler filters. Call them as it will not display the special on the website or in the catalog. |
