If you are going to use the fireplace with the glass closed it needs to be
ceramic. If the glass will be doors that are kept open when the fire is going it can be tempered glass. Obviously ceramic is the much better choice. "Roger Taylor" wrote in message . .. wrote in message ps.com... I want to make a glass fireplace screen out of a 2' x 3' piece of glass. (I know it can be done because my brother has had one for years, but doesn't know where it came from.) I am planning to get one of my glass suppliers to provide a piece of glass with the foot holes pre-drilled and handling holes in the top. I'm not sure what sort of heat treatment the glass should have. Would tempering help it withstand the heat, or make it more prone to shatter? I can get just about any treatment (tempering, annealed, heat strengthened, etc) but am not sure which is best for a relatively high heat situation. Fireplace glass is actually a high temp. high strength transparent ceramic, and takes special materials to make at the outset, and is not simply "tempered glass". Nevertheless, there are a number of fireplace and woodstove "glass" providers on the internet, which supply these ceramics. |
