Hi Group. We need to remove an old wood parquet floor that has been glued
down. What is the best way to remove it? I have a broad chisel and can get
the chisel under the wood tiles to pry them up, but I don't want to hurt the
sub-floor. We will be installing Pergo quick-lock flooring when the parquet
floor is removed. Help!

Have you bought the PErgo yet? Read the Mannington warranty and compare it
with the Pergo if not.

I removed parquet a while back. It also was glued down. The subfloor was
so uneven I had to put 2 layers of paper down before I had the hardwood
installed. Laminate wouldn't have worked....

Seems like a shame to replace a genuine wood product with cheap plastic.
Can't you repair or refinish the parquet? Unless it is structurally damaged,
you can make it look like new.

Thanks everybody. We are going to put the Pergo Laminate Flooring over the
parquet wood floor, The thresholds to the carpeted rooms concern me.

Careful. I've been told by several flooring specialists that laying laminate over a real wood parquet floor is not advised. The laminate will prevent the wood from breathing , making it sweat, and may lead to heavy warping in the parquet. It can also promote conditions where dry rot may occur. Believe me, I've had such an instalation and when I had a water leak, the parquet subfloor warped by around 3". All the top floor had to be scrapped to get in and remove the parquet. If the parquet had been serviceable, I'd have lifted the laminate that the builders fitted and had it refinished. It was 47mm thick harwood similar to mahogany.

The good news is that the parquet is usually quite easy to lift. The blokes who did mine did several hundred sqft in an hour or so. The bitumen adhesive gets very brittle over the years. The down side is that the lifting process, using a shovel to plough the blocks up, produces huge amounts of black dust.

I would never replace a solid parquet floor with laminate if the parquet is serviceable. Most refinishers will sand and seal for under £20 sqm.

If you say pull up the parquet because it can rot and expand well so
will any wood sub floor if you leak enough water.
