I would like to install a new garbage disposer in the kitchen (none was
there previously). There is a light switch near the sink just right
above the dishwasher. I consider myself a novice in hardcore electrical
wiring stuff (though I do some basic stuff such as installing a ceiling
fan etc). If possible I want to make the wiring for the disposer that
is safe and adhere to NJ wiring codes. Could some one please help me
with what exactly needs to be done and how I can do it?

Also in this group, while searching I came across a posting which said
complete houe wiring should typically be done in "parallel" connection
method not in "serial" way. Turning on a hair dryer would dim all the
lights/appliances if the connection was done serially. It seems if the
wiring was done incorrectly then diming of lights would occur and that
the home inspection would fail from the township (mine is a 4 yr old
new construction). Is there an easy way without ripping walls to find
out how the connections/wiring were done?

Is the light switch fork the light or does it control a receptacle under the
sink for a disposal? If it is for a light, just leave it alone. Run a new
wire to someplace else.

You have a couple of options.
With a continuous feed model you have to have a switch to control it. With
a batch feed model you only need power tot he disposal, making wiring
easier.

We need to know where you can get electricity to run to the disposal.
Wiring the unit is simple, just connecting the two power lines and a ground.
