Default Do I need to use drywall tape?

We just finished taking some well-glued wallpaper off a wall, had to
use a lot of water and scraping. A couple of pieces of drywall tape
came off too. Do I need to replace it, or can I just use a crack
filler (PolyFilla or whatever) to repair it before painting? Realized
that I'm really not clear why one uses drywall tape in the first
place??? TIA . . . . Mike
