Default Hot Water Boiler Temperature Controls

I recently purchased a home with an old (maybe 40-50 years old) hot
water boiler for heating. We have the standard big old radiator units
throughout the house. The unit works wonderfully (for its age) and I'm
wondering if anyone has any experience with:

1. Properly setting the temperature of the house. Is a hot water boiler
the type of system where you would want it set at a constant
temperature throughout the day, to keep it more efficient? Or is
letting it go down to 50 and back up to 70 every day more efficient?

2. Does anyone have any experience with new models of boilers/hydronics
and their efficiency vs older ones?

Thanks!
