Default john deere 111 lawn tractor questions

Hi All,

I am the new owner of an old John Deere 111 lawn tractor. Not sure
when it was made, but I am guessing in the 1980's. Anyway, it runs
fine, but I have a few questions. I apologize for my ignorance, but
we are moving into a new house and I have not had time to bond with
the mower yet and take it apart, so all my experience is the 10
minutes I have ridden it through our lawn to put it in the shed. When
I have time in the upcoming weeks I am planning to take it apart to
see how it works.

This mower has a hydrostatic tranmission. To me, it seems a bit weak,
similar to how a slipping clutch feels. Is there anything I can look
at or adjust on these trannies? I plan on cleaning everything and at
least checking the tran. fluid level, maybe it is low?

This mower has two pedals, a left and a right. Its hard to tell
exactly what these do. The left seems like a clutch, but the right
seems like a clutch and brake, but this may be because the
transmission is slipping, so is the right pedal just a brake?

If anyone has any experience with this series of tractors, let me
know. I currently have the original briggs 11hp engine that came with
it, but I think I will put a 12.5hp tecumseh enduro in if after a
while. It will also become a fun project as I want to dissasemble the
body from the frame, and repaine the body, hood, and deck, and
possible make a muffler for it.

Thanks guys.
