Lot of people in my opinion set their mowers too low.
But regardless just what have you got lying around on the grass
(the area that you mow) that would do that kind of damage? It
takes a lot to damage a Briggs and Stratton to point where it
won't run.
BTW I hope whoever is mowing uses proper steel reinforced
footwear etc. I've seen people mowing in sneakers, even sandals.
My work boots have the scars to prove the value of wearing proper
footwear. Following my incident I completed mowing the half acre
and that night noticed a small bruise on one side of my foot.
But I did not lose, as did an acquainance, two and half toes when
wearing rubber 'gum boots'! The gum boot, minus his severed toes
was used at safety meetings for several years afterwards. He was
off work for months and had to change jobs, fortunately wthin the
same organisation!
Be careful out there.

Thanks for the tip Terry.

My step-son ran over a tree stump that was pretty obviously (I felt)
something NOT to run over. hehe

Just following the same principle husbands have followed in kitchen and
laundry for years- to wit, if you don't wanna do it on a regular basis, do
it WRONG the first time or two, and they will get fed up and quit leaning on
you.

aem sends...

If that is still a 'regular' lawn mower engine, it probably "jumped
time". Sudden stop, flywheel mounted magneto, sheared the keyway or
pin, magneto isn't properly timed to TDC any more. Quite common.
Take it to the shop, tell them what happened, they will know.

BTW, watch out for a NASTY backfire that could injure your wrist, if
you try to pull the cord with the ignition timing in the wrong place.

the noise is more then likely blade not tightened properly, check and
tighten

the smoke is when it was tipped on its side to change the bent blade oil
from crankcase went to where it should not have. if it does still run check
oil level start up let run smoke should clear up in 5 mins.

check the crank if it is bent buy a new unit (may be cheaper then a proper
fix)

check the flywheel key if it is sheered the rope will snap out of your hand
when trying to start the unit
if your not sure how to cheek the key & crankshaft take it to a shop and get
them to look at it.

good luck
