Default DR Horton in NC Triangle Area

Has anyone had good or bad experience with DR Horton in the Triangle
area of NC. We are currently looking at a property in Southern Durham.
It is one of the last houses in a somewhat small development (only 60
or so plots) and it seems on the surface to be a decent deal.
Construction has just begun and will be completed around April.

Just trying to get a gage from any other North Carolinians out there if
they had luck or were screwed by these guys.

Thanks!

Many tract home builders take shortcuts that can cost you thousands.
Learn to spot the common ones like no window flashing especially. You
can see diagrams and read discussions on sites like
www.jlconline.com
or www.buildingscience.com of how to do things right. Then compare
with what the builder is doing. The houses may look good but they leak
if things are missing or done wrong. Do not rely on laws, codes, or
warranties to get you thru it either. Very hard to enforce for the
homeowner. Many new homes have code violations and/or fail to follow
installation instructions of materials which voids the material
manufacturer's warranty. Also check out www.hadd.com and
www.rateyourbuilder.info Here's a pic of much of what i was talking
about, flashing windows--enjoy, and good luck:

Knew there was one link I was forgetting. NC has a consumer group that
did a report on new home construction a couple of yrs ago:
http://ncpirg.org/NC.asp?id2=23338 I think there may be more to it
than this page but it's all i had saved.

As already mentioned visit www.hadd.com - HADD is short for Homeowners
Against Deficient Dwellings. Not only can you search the database and
read other homeowner's horror stories but on the home page if you
scroll down on the right side are Reference Guides and Downloads
sections. Use these guides as what to look for and what to do when
looking to buy a house. Good and bad experiences aren't limited to just
one builder or one area - your neighbor may have a great experience
while you on the other hand could be living the nightmare. One
suggestion is that you go to the area you are looking to buy and ask
the people already living there. This is especially important because
the superintendent and customer service/warranty reps of a subdivision
and their actions can make or break it.

If you have other questions you can contact me directly. I am a
volunteer with HADD and also had the unfortunate experience of owning a
home riddled with construction defects. An ordeal that started within
the first two years we owned the house and continued for 6 years.

Good luck.
