Replace 1 SQ FT Of a Carpet...
Hi
I made a mistake of keeping a hot iron box on the carpet and that left an ugly mark on the carpet. I am looking for a good idea as on how to deal with it, As of now, it looks like replacing the part is the only option. I am not sure how to replace a part of the carpet. Since this is on the stair case, i am assuming that laying a new piece of carpet does now show up badly. Any ideas/Suggestions/pointers are greatly appreciated. Thanks Sri |

Do you have access to the same style and color of carpet? A good carpet guy can make seams in a carpet that are unnoticeable and could fix you up.. .provided the new carpet matches the old. Ironically, an iron is involved in sealing the seams. :-) Otherwise, replacing the stairs carpet shouldn't cost too much--it's a small amount of carpet. The trick would be to find a carpet guy who doesn't mark up so darned much and who'd be willing to come out and do a small job like that. They're out there certainly. Act now while the season is still relatively slow. -- Todd H. http://www.toddh.net/ |

Have a carpet installer use that carpet for the repair and replace it with something similar. |

Clark G. Is right! Taking what you need from a closet is really the
only way to go.Unless your carpet is new you wont find an exact match in the store. Carpet mills change materials often. Only other soultion I can think of would be to replace the complete stairway section. Steve |

Steve Yet another example for the list of why you should always stash a little extra away whenever you do a household decorating or trim project. That half-box of tiles, stick of odd trim, extra special-order light globe, etc, etc, may come in damn handy in a few years. If I were to recarpet, I'd tightly roll the larger scraps, double-bagged in taped visqueen, and stash high in the basement, back of coat closet, wherever I thought they would survive undamaged. (doesn't help this time, of course, but something to keep in mind for the future.) aem sends... |

Home Depot unforutnately is overpriced for installed carpet. And their lead times were crappy, and they wanted payment up front. I was able to find a guy locally who installed carpet for about $2 per square yard more than I can even buy crapier carpet bulk for home depot. If you know any realtors, or can befriend one, they tend to have leads on independent carpet guys who don't have a ton of overhead, deal directly with the carpet mill/warehouse, and can get things done quickly. If it's just that spot you need to replace though, the closet carpet idea is a fabulous one. And I have to imagine there's a writeup somewhere that shows how to do carpet seams. You can probably rent the carpet iron and the sticky backing stuff from home depot, for instance. Buy some cheap remnant carpet to practice on before trying the patch repair yerself. And if you completely screw it up the fallback is to get a carpet guy in to replace the carpet on the stairs. You'd only be out the carpet iron rental fee and some of your time.
