What does "lose power" mean? Do circuit breaker trip? GFCI's trip out? Fuses blow? Lights dim or darken? What does it mean that it "come back on"? Do you have to call the power company to reset your line? Do you have to reset breakers or GFCI's? Is it the main breaker or a line breaker? How old is the house? Aluminum or copper wiring? Any recent wire work? House every been remodeled? What does it mean for the "dryer shorts out"? A short circuit means a direct connection from source to destination, which will create a lot of heat leading to a fire if uncorrected. You should have fuses or circuit breakers to protect you from this situation. If there is a short, and your breakers are not tripping out, then you have a serious, serious problem. You should leave the house and stay in a motel or hotel (or with a friend/relative) until the problem is corrected since it will eventually cause a fire. More likely, the dryer is drawing more current than what the circuit can handle. It might be an under-sized circuit, an improperly installed circuit, a bad breaker, or a loose connection in the circuit. As the dryer runs, it draws current, which causes the voltage to drop. That voltage drop makes lights dim and some items will shut off. Most likely, you will need an electrician out to fix this. They will have the voltage and infrared meters needed to find this problem. -john- -- ================================================== ==================== John A. At most, it should kill the 220V breaker to the dryer (assuming an electric dryer right??). If it's taking out the main breaker for the entire house, it's possible you have 2 problems: overcurrent in the dryer plus a faulty breaker in teh breaker box. You'd be well advised to make two phone calls: one to a dryer repairman and the other to an electrician. Get the electrician out there first--they can tell you once they validate and fix the wiring and breaker whether or not the dryer is drawing more current than it should be. Then you can either keep or cancel the dryer repair appointment. Best Regards, -- Todd H. http://www.toddh.net/ |
