Default dryer shorts out house electric

It should not take out the entire house. At most, it should kill the
220V breaker to the dryer (assuming an electric dryer right??).

If it's taking out the main breaker for the entire house, it's
possible you have 2 problems: overcurrent in the dryer plus a faulty
breaker in teh breaker box.

You'd be well advised to make two phone calls: one to a dryer
repairman and the other to an electrician. Get the electrician out
there first--they can tell you once they validate and fix the wiring
and breaker whether or not the dryer is drawing more current than it
should be. Then you can either keep or cancel the dryer repair
appointment.
