water heater preparation for loss of water
hi
More than likely we are going to lose our water supply due to the hurricane in the gulf. Thus i would like to stop the water heater from coming on as there will more than likely be no water in it. Will turning the knob to the "OFF" position be sufficient. If i do that will the pilot light be still lit? Please advice thanks |

thanks
Cool thanks. I will turn knob to pilot to prevent water heater from coming on to heat an empty tank. Thanks for the tip. I am planning to do just that and also fill my garbage cans (35 gallons) for water to use in the rest rooms thanks |

Actually, for what it's worth, there will be water in your water heater unless: a) the water supply is shut off AND b) you run enough hot water to drain it HOWEVER o without water pressure, there's little chance of b) succeeding. I'd continue with you plan of turning off the water heater. I'd probably not even bother with the pilot either--just relight it when you return. Actually, I might consider turning off the main natural gas valve into the house in case anything really nutty happened so as to minimize risk of fire if something knocked a natural gas fixutre loose. -- Todd H. http://www.toddh.net/ |

Flip the breaker for it in your fuse box.
